Diabetes with its acute complications, has become a major hazard in India. World Health Organisations (WHO) projections show that at present 32 million Indian have diabetes, but half of them are not aware of it. This number is expected to swell to 80 million by the year 2030. Among individuals aged 20 and above, 15.5% of the population is affected by diabetes. Only 22% knew that diabetes is preventable ad only 11.8% attributed obesity and/or physical inactivity as a cause for diabetes. The study demonstrated that awareness and control measures for diabetes are still grossly inadequate and hence the need for awareness drives on diabetes and its complications.
With an estimated 35 million people with diabetes, India has the world's largest diabetes population.
